hi i was wondering if anyone could help i currently have a tank set up as below but will be recieving a new one shortly! alot BIGGER!! my water levels are:

ph 7.5-8.0
nitrite, amonia nil or near as
nitrate 10 ppm
phosphate 5+ (but i think that is because i went a little overboard the othe day with some fodd but then the tank was due to be cleaned i.e. water change and gravel etc so has come down now!)

are these levels ok to have shrimp? what do i need to change? not sure what level the hardness is but it is quite hard

Cheers

I keep shrimps in water with a ph of 8.5 and have never had any problems
all your other stats sound fine too

What shrimp ? If you are talking about Caridina Japonica (algae shrimp) - pH is absolutely fine. However your nitrite and ammonia needs to absolutely be zero consistently. So make sure your tank is well established. Shrimp do not tolerate ammonia or nitrite well at all. Hardness, Nitrate and Phosphate are fine.

Sounds like you live somewhere in the London area :)

what do you feed your shrimp?

I feed my red claws on bits of algae tabs(normally their main meal)....but they will feed on anything the fish are feeding on but i must say that other shrimps will graze on algae on plant leaves(depends what species they are).shrimps are opportunistic so anything that gets to the bottom is food hope this helps.....only once i have ever seen the red claws for sale that was just over a year ago,and never seen them about since. And they do grow quite large mine are probably close to 2 1/2 inches and have claws that could potentially harm small fish.they are well fed so i guess thats why i dont have any problems....hope this helps

thanks for all your advice! i was thinking about getting some sort of background for them to climb up but i am wanting a quite heavily planted tank so will the pants do the trick?

Also, get them a good hiding place for when they molt, mine have opted for a tacky castle, that I would really like to get rid of, I think they know I'm onto them, as one is always inside of it making sure that I don't take it out.
Make sure they can't get sucked up by filter as well, mine did and intake is now sporting permanent fish net.

lol thats shrimps for ya... very possesive of thir fav spots....mine are to big for the filter to bother them

cheers for all this guys!!! your info is much appreciatted!!!! i was thinking i needed a good cover/condensation cover!!!
