Water level?

Just got a red sea Nano peninsula set it up. I can't see any water level marks? Is there one, there was a splashing as water goes over the outlet, if I add more water it stops but the ato doesn't work water level to high not sure what to do, also when the water is higher the skimmer works better. I'm new to marine tanks any help please

Need pictures and more info so we know what you are talking about

Protein skimmers need the water level at a particular height. You want them to produce dark foam that slowly creeps up and into the collection cup. If you get lots of clear water in the collection cup, the water level is too high. If you get no fluid in the collection cup, the water level is too low.
