a 1gal a day isnt bad atall in a 55. that sounds like evaparation too me as well. now when you are loseing 3 gallons a day from a 10gal you have a problem

I seem to lose more to evaporation in the winter, when the air is drier, as opposed to summer when there is more humidity. Tighter fitting lids on some of my tanks have cut down on evaporation big time. Cheap light diffuser panels cut to size work great.

yeah i'm building a hood right now so it should be fine once the hood is done.

well the hood is done and apparently its blocking the evaporation at a cost of the wood rotting. i took the hood out because i think that there were wood particles getting into the water. anyway i think i'm going to get one of the evaporation trays but the only problem is: how do i accomidate a hang-on-back filter?

You needto waterproof that wood so it doesnt rot, you can cut a whole of a plastic condensation tray for the filter
