i have been looking after me tank now for 9 months i seem to be handling most things that it throws at me apart from the water keeps turning brown it doesnt matter when or how long i change the filter sponge (the white one on the top they reccomend to change it every week)
this matter is really buggung me i have tried sludge buster
maybe i dont have it set up right can someone tell me the correct way for the sponges to be put in the filter i have a juwel rio 180 thanks in advance for any help

we need more info here. what do you have in your tank, wood, rocks, plants, etc.

could be lots of things 1 possibility is bogwood leeching tannins

in my tank i have got
2x clown loach
2x silver shark(just got before christmas as present)
4xmale guppy
8x neon tetra
4x molly
all my plants are plastic as the supplier up here doesnt seem to be able to get decent ones
1 x blue slate stone large
3 x med blue slate
1 x poly carb house (fish tank decoration)
hope this is more use to you thanks again

could also be a direct sunlight problem

Any other fish in there and have you recently added some driftwood??.... You change your filter, but how often do you change your water??
i change it as soon as it starts going brown last time i changed approx half the tank that was 2 weeks ago and it is just startin to go again so will do it the moro as i must get more filter start

180l... All those fish (incl. Clown loaches & sharks)??.... I thinks,.... this calls for (at least) a weekly 70% water change....

it sounds like you just need lots of large water changes, but just one question;

What did you do to the slate before you put it in the water? anything? depending on where you get the stone from, it could have tons of little nasties on it.

i would say it could be comming off the slate - was it especially designed for aquatic purposes ?
some slate contains metals that will throw off rust/tannings into the water

you definately shoudl be doing more than a 30% water change in 2 weeks 50-75% weekly would be recommended with that amount of stock

good luck

when did you last rinse you filter sponges in tank water and have you recently changed the floss in the filter ? the filter floss is the white stuff on the top and should be renewed every week
