chlorine kills the bacteria. tap water has chlorine. when i add the tap water, for the minutes it takes to refill and add conditioner, doesnt the chloring immediatly attack the bacteria? should i treat the water somehow before i add it to the tank? :*)

I add dechlorinator as I fill the tank. For larger tanks I add in 10 gallon increments, smaller tanks in 5 gallon increments.

Once the water coming out of the hose is the right temperature, I squirt in enough dechlor for 5 or 10 gallons & start filling. Dechlorinator works almost instantly, has no effect on the fish or bacteria.

You need a certain concentration of chlorine to kill bacteria. Since we normally dont do large water changes the number of bacteria killed would be a lot less.

I don't think chlorine kills bacteria instantly so you may lose a very small amount of bacteria but it won't be a problem. If you're using buckets to refill, just add the dechlorinator to the water before adding to the tank. If you're filling from the hose, add half before you start filling and the other half after you're finished.
