Im doing a fishless cycle, but when i was on a fish-in cycle, i noticed when i changed about 25% of the water (around what most people do a week) the temperature barely moved...

My question is, is it necessary to match temperature for small water changes as i didn't see a temperature drop or any ill effects when doing up to 25%

Thoughts?

Is this question for a tank with fish in or a tank without fish?

No if your doing a small water change there is no real need to temp match unless you know it will drop the temp more than a couple of degrees, large water changes can also be matched within reason, as long as the temp drop isnt to drastic then it shouldn't really cause any damage at all :)

For small water changes, I can't see it being a problem ... not ice cold water but you know, shouldn't be a problem.

If you was doing 50%+ with pure cold water, then yea I wouldnt advice it lol.

Well im not doing water changes currently, but i was thinking... When i was changing the water in my fish-in cycle i practically have the thermometer stuck in my face as its on the front... And it just got me thinking, is it worth matching the temperature for small water changes as i didn't see a big difference.

Like above, no if the water change is only small and the temp doesnt drop drastic more than say 2 degree's it will be fine.

Well after a while i had a good system going... So it doesn't matter for me anyway, was just out of interest.

I dechlorinate all the new water in buckets and leave it to sit out for a few hours in a room thats probably the warmest in the house and its actually pretty close to the tank temperature after that anyway.

The dangers of rapid temperature changes are drastically overstated. They happen in the wild when it rains, and they happen in our tanks when we change the water.

I personally do 50% changes every week on my 260 litre tank, and refill with cold water. Never had any problems. It actually encourages some species to breed.

Obviously if the temp was going to fall 10 degrees or something silly, yes it would be an issue, but so long as you apply some common sense to the matter, temp matching probably isn't required for the majority of water changes.
