i am trying to determine the best way of heating up the water before adding it back into the tank after a water change for a 55 gallon tank. does anyone have any ideas? i was thinking of just filling the bucket with a floating thermometer til it read at a really close (within a degree) to see if that would work? any other thoughts?

Hi, you can do that, though your tank will be okay with 25-30% water change of cold water, the fish seem to like it and it actually encourages some fish to lay eggs as they do it in the rainy season in the wild and this replicates this. I do this and would think most do.

If you have really delicate fish, or if your worried, you can leave the water overnight so it matches room temp, or add hot water (pref. from a kettle) to get the right temp, about 2litres of hot to 10litres cold seems to be about the right.

Good Luck!

well right now my most delicate fish is an angel which is most likely going to be the most delicate of my community tank? so do you think that would be ok, i mean of course make sure my water isnt freezing but if its off a few degrees it will be ok?

Have you considered hooking a garden hose up to your water faucet? You can get the adapter at Home Depot or Lowe's. Its an easy way to get exactly the right temp water in your tank and makes big water changes much easier.

Angels won't mind water change temperatures a few degrees cooler. As mentioned, this is a way to get some species, including angels to spawn.

The thing is- if you replace 1/3 of the water and the new water is 9 deg F warmer or cooler, the resulting change is a max 3 dg. Even 50% is 4.5 dg. If you return the new water over several minutes, the odds are good it will never reach the max. difference but be under that. Most fish can withstand a few degree temp change.
