When i do my water changes i shut off the filter and the heater. I look into my filter and the biomax isnt sitting in water. Do i take the bag and submerse it in the tank while i am doing water changes so it doesnt dry and kill the developing (my tank is week 2 in cycling) bacteria? Or should it be fine for the 10 or so minutes the filter is not running?

I'm sure someone else will have better details, but as long as it doesn't dry out it should be fine. A quick 10 minute water change SHOULD be fine for the biomax

Don't worry about it for the duration of the tank cleaning. Should not be a problem at all. I would be more concerned with not disturbing the bag and the manner in which the bacteria colonies have taken hold on the biomax. So I'd leave it alone except for your period filter cleanings.

My AquaClear filter, when I plug it in, will not completely start on its own and I have to pour water in the back of the filter (where biomax is) for it to start going properly. This won't affect the colonies that are trying to get established on it will it? I never had moved the bag in these 2 weeks but today when I noticed and thought about it I was worried so much that the bacteria would dry and die so i put it in to the tank. I hope I did not disturb it then, either! Jeez I am learning so many details to this 'hobby'. I will be semi pro in no time with all the mistakes myself and other n00bs do with these poor fish. :look:

Yes - I had an Aquaclear - good little filters. It's okay when the water drains during the cleaning. And the fact that you moved the bag is not a big deal. When I had the Aquaclear I would just scoop tank water into the reservoir until it was full and then plug it back in.
