Please, if you will, take a look at my stock(beneath my post). Then tell me how often I should be doing a water change. In your own opinion.
Also, all the treatments I use and plant fertalizer and so on. Do I measure that for the entire 300 litres or just the litres that I replace.

Thank you kindly

Si

i would say once every 2 weeks should be good. it really depends though, get yourself a nitrate test kit and see how fast it goes over 40 ppm. just check every other day, and when it becomes over 40, change the water and count how many days that took.

Prob best to just get in the habit of changing it on a regular. I prefer Wednesdays of Sundays because it's easier to remember. With that stock, you can get away with two weeks. Never try to push it for a month however.

Weekly would be best, but lots of people do not seem to have the time these days with work/school and whatnot. But I know your fish would just love a weekly change...

I tend to go roughly for every five days. Just three buckets full.
But what about treatments and ferts?

Thanks for your responses though, guys.

Whenever i do a water change i just give a quick squirt of ferts just to top the levels up. I dont follow the manufacturers guides. At the end of the day if you followed their instructions you would be going through it a bottle full a week! I gotta 130 litre tank and after a 30 % water change i add 10ml of ferts just to top up. And my plants are thriving!

Thats sort of what I'm like.... I was tryin to do it according to the instructions this time to see if it would improve from the last time I kept fish. I'll probably end up doing as you do within a month.

The more often you can do a water change, the better. Simple as that.

If you are dosing with ferts etc (like me), i stick to 1 water change per week and dose straight after so the fertiliser is not wasted by changing water.

Hope this helps. :good:

WC once a week. You should also add ferts for the full amount of water in the tank as any previously added would have been used by that time so there would only be a trace amount left in the tank.

i do 50% water changes whenever i feel like, 1-2 times per week

My water changes are generally 15 to 25 percent but it really depends on the fish you have, how heavily stocked it is and how much you feed. The more fish and more food you put in, the higher the nitrates will be and one of the main reasons for doing water changes is to lower nitrates. Also, if you have delicate fish, you may have to do larger ones to keep the water conditions as near perfect as possible.

Have a jewel 260.
ripped out the filter, don't think they do enough.
If you have that stock, little and often should be ok, with a largish water change every 4-6 weeks.
I dont use fertilizers or and treatments on the freshwater trops, so cannot advise.
Hope that helps
