I was wondering. When I do water changes, the water I take out is like a Blue color. Should I be concerned? There is no sign of algea and there is no cloudy water. No direct sunlight. Water stats are good. Just water is blue when I take it out and I do my weekly water changes every weekend at 25%. Any help would be apperciated. Thanks

Hi Tear70 just a couple of questions,

What size it the tank ?? (Ltr or Gallons),
how long has the tank been up and running ?? is it a matured tank
Has the tank Been cycled or is it currently cycling
What fish stock do you currently have in ther ??

have you got a water test kit so you can monitor the water stats ?? if not i would recomend getting one soon so you know exactly what condition your water is in, imo API Master test kits are one of the best you can get, its a liquid test kit and if in the uk will cost about £20 but it is worth EVERY PENNY !!!!

how long has the water been blueish ??
have you been treating the tank with any meds at all ????

Its alot of questions but the info will help on determining what the blueish water could be a result of.

In General water changes depend on the size of the tank, the type of filtration you have and the fish stock, I have 3 tanks and look after a further 4 tanks too. my main tank at home i need to do a partial water change maybe every month where as one of my smaller tanks i need to do partial water changed every week or every other week, this is due to the difference in volume of water and the fish stock in each tank.

Hi Scott,

I have a 36g Bowfront tank.
It has been up and running for about 4 months now.
Not sure if it is in a cycle or not atm.
I have 14 Mollies and 2 Plecos.

My stats are
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0ppm
Ph: 7.2

It has been blueish for about 2 months. Maybe some small signs before the 2 month mark. It never really has caused me to be concerned because it never affected the look of my tank. Always clear. Just when I start vaccuming / water change is when I noticed the color is different in the change bucket.

I do a water change every weekend, 25% water change.

The fish show no sign of stress and are swiming around normally. I have even had alot of fry come out of this tank with no problems. *I have 2 10g fry tanks filled.*

No medicine is being used or has been used. Just water and salt and de chlornate.

Thanks!

Have you used any medications that contain methylene blue? Some ich medications contain it. It can also bond with the silicone in the tank and leach into the water. I'm a bit worried about you nitrate reading. You should show a trace amount of nitrates if your tank is cycled properly. The fact that it is monday and if you did a 25% water change this weekend could have removed nitrates to an undetectable level however.

I do not have blue gravel.

And I did my water change actually at 1:00am monday morning... *I can't sleep* I tested in the morning.

I have never used any medicine to this date. Could it be algae? I do not see any visable signs of it.

Thanks agian for the quick response.

Even with a 25% change there should be a Nirate reading as there is a readable level in tap water.

What kind of testing kit do you have

This may seem stupid but what colour bucket do you use?

Do you have anyting blue in your tank at all?

Well I tested my water agian and everything was Zero agian except for Nitrate of 0.2. I don't know what kind of test I have but its a water / liquid test one.

My bucket color is white. When I first start doing the water change, the water is clear, just when more and more come in the bucket the water turns the blueish color.

Nothing in my setup is blue. I have 2 live plants and several fake plants.

This is my tank setup.

I am just thinking maybe its algae? Just nothing visable yet.

Try filling up the bucket with tap water and check. This way we can rule out the source.

The water is slightly blue but nothing like the water I take out of the tank.

Well, My other 2 (10g fry tanks) do not have this blue color. Is it possible its just algae?

So stats are fine, fish are fine... shouldn't worry too much then?

This is so weird. The only other thing that I can think of is the filter cartridge. I know some filter cartridges (Penguin) have a blue floss type covering, does yours by chance? I wouldn't worry too much if your stats and fish are fine...
