Is it ok to use the hot water from the tap? As i know that hot water systems can get calcium build ups.

I usually do an 8 Litre water change on my small tank. What i do is fill the bucket to 2 litres with HOT ONLY water, turn the hot off, then COLD ONLY for 6 litres. That works out to be almost the exact temperature that the tank is at (25oC).

So is that ok to do?

Thanks

Thats what I do, had no problems yet, as long as you are using dechlorinater and such.

Never been a problem for me either...Always try to get the fresh water to temp before adding it to the tank...saves thermal shock for the poor little blighters! :)

No doubt there will be those that say OMG!! You do WHAT??!!!!! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

But I aint one of them. :D

Unless you have a heating system that's a) Older then the hills or B) sat dormant for a hell of a long time, I can't see a reaon not to...

*braces himself for the answers*

Cheers and Beers (Actually, no beers at the moment)

If most likely differs from household to household, the copper heating tanks can be different, some much older than others, etc,

Its best to just get cold straight from the mains, then heat with heater, but then agian if your fish are fine then go ahead,

but the water from heating tanks supposidly have more copper in water from the tank, this i think can build up in your tank, and can get bad for the fish over time, I think !

Just been having a read of some other posts. Check out:

It's worth noting that it does depend on what type of heating system your house is fitted with (I should have typed this in my earlier post, but I'm ill. Sue me.) If it's a hot-water header tank in the loft, then I wouldn't be using it...ther could be a bunch of nasties living in it. Yuck. If on the other hand, you have a combi boiler fed direct from the rising main, nasties don't have time to get in and make 'emselves at home...so it should be fine for FISH. (I've always used combis and as I said b4, it's never presented a problem)

Nasties in your water? this is the stuff we drink etc.

i use the hot tap and have no problems and have done so for years, after i couldn't be bothered to wait for the kettle.

the heat difference isn't really alot say you had a 10g tank and did a 2.5g water change if the tank is at 25c and the water you add at 8c, if i've worked it out right should only frop the temperature by about 2c which is not a problem.

most people with large tanks fill them straight from the cold tap. with cold water as it warms back up in the tank you see bubbles, which means the oxygen the warmer water can't hold unlike the cold water is being pushed out.

i've started to loose track again lol.

:good:

You should be fine mike - I was doing it this way until I bought a house.

I never had any problems.

If you are concerned, boil a jug of cold water in the kettle and use that instead - for 8 litres, one kettle full of boiling water should be plenty to bring it up to temperature.

(still am but have a different heating system now - instantaneous gas hot water - heated as you need it from the mains).

Yuuuk I hope you don't drink water from your HOT tap!!!!!!

Yup, nasties. Picture that big old tank...with a bunch of water sitting in it, getting heated up....the tank then drains but not all the way, the inlet valve opens and the tank refills...Much like an oversized kettle is treated, right? You've seen the bottom of a kettle when it hasn't been de-scaled? Thats caused by the chemical reaction within the cold water (Dont ask me, but I can find out for you, if you're that interested anyone?) and bits flaking off the heating element...Same happens in a copper heating tank. Over time, this sediment builds up and will of course the lighter bits will fin their way into your hot water that runs from your tap. *shrug* No problem as far as bathing is concerned...but I wouldn't be drinking it if I were you... :look: By the same token, I'd be dubious of putting it into my fish tank...IMHO anyhow :)

Feeling better today :D

lol is your hot water really like that?

because with how much treatment water gets surely they are going to take the bits out?

unless you have a awful water tank i can't see that.

Yeah, sure they take it out of the water...but that's before it gets into your mains heating tank...:) The water in your rising main is as clean as it's going to get. The water after it has been through a tanked system is going to be different...I'm talking about the copper (or whatever) jacket systems...I've seen one taken out and cut in half, and the bottom of it was a mess...urgh. Wouldn't catch me drinking it, let alone putting it in my tank...again, IMHO :)
