Hi everyone,

Had a sick Otto that passed away, :/ he was in the hospital tank so now I need to sterilize it and the heater etc that I also put in there. I was wondering what you all use for this?

Thanks, :good:

A mild bleach solution (5-10%) and hot water. Let the tank air out for a few days afterwards and you'll be good to go.

a question on this topic. everytime you use meddication and return the fish to the main tank or it passes away do you have to empty the tank and start over, i.e starting the cycling process again?

That is the safest thing to do Nick. If you keep the tank empty between uses, the simple exposure to dry air will kill most pathogens that affect fish.

but surely an ill fish can come at any time and you dont have a week or 2 to let it cycle

If your fish are getting sick that fast there might be something bigger wrong. If you're really paranoid you could use two small filters and alternate which ones goes in the hospital tank. Keeping the hospital tank set up and operating without any kind of sterilization is just asking for trouble so you're going to have to break it down to clean it.

If you already have an established tank, you can just use some of the media from that to cycle the hospital. Just dry the tank and it should be fine.
