I recently purchased an Aqua One AquaNano 30 with the plan to house a betta. However I didnt realise until I got it that the rear of the tank has a filter compartment built in that takes the depth of the tank down from 30cm to 22cm. This is rubbish as it means this 6.5 gallon tank becomes 4.8 at best.

So I want to remove the rear filter compartment and stick with a standard internal filter. Does anyone know if this will be easy to do?

Here is a view of the compartment:

I have no idea how easy it would be to remove it. I'd keep it, if I were you. Don't forget that any water in the filter compartment counts as part of the total volume. I know many people keep bettas in these tanks without problems.

If you're determined to take it out, I'd try something with a long thin blade, or even a piece of fishing line, as it'll almost certainly be siliconed in.
