I was thinking about getting a female betta for my little man. My male betta is in a 5 gallon aquarium right now, and the female would go in a 2 gallon, how long, should I keep the female in with the male, just until she is done laying?
And is anything like live bearers, where the fry could have both parents colors mixed?

Hi, breeding bettas can be expensive and is alot harder than livebearers. You will need to condition the bettas for 2 weeks first. I wont go into all the detail here about how to breed as their is already a pinned topic on it. Breeding bettas also takes up alot of time and space and the fry can be very sensitive to water conditions. You cannot just put the male and female together as they it will probably end up with one of them being killed. Before i started to breed i researched for a good couple of months!!!

oh dear... breeding bettas is not as simple as it sounds. also, if your boy is a veil tail, or from a LFS, it's inadvisable because they are worth almost nothing on the market, and you could easily end up with numbers in the hundreds which you might not be able to get rid of easily. all the males will need to be kept seperately as soon as their gender can be identified, as well as any females who are too aggressive to live in the growout tank. which will mean lots of jars that will need daily cleansing.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean about livebearers' colors mixing, but if you're interested in the genetics of colors there are a few people on this forum (not me  ) who can help you.

also, niether a 2 or 5 gallon tank will be of much use to you. You'll want a 10 gallon tank minimum for breeding, and something larger for the growout tank(s). This is by no means an inexpensive venture, but if you're still interested there's a LOT of information on the web, and many people here in this forum who have been successful. They'll be able to help you more if you have questions, but please PLEASE research this. Breeding bettas isn't something that you want to go into blindly.

yes as starrynights said by breeding petshop bettas you will only be adding to the numbers that are already homeless!!! Also you could end up with up to 500 fry!!!

Holy cow, please do NOT jump my bones here. It wont even be for awhile anyways, I was thinking of getting a female, doesnt mean I was gonna throw her in with the male right away. This discussion is definatly over.

Morquin, I don't think anyone meant to offend you at all. :) It's just that there are topics like this one on this forum ALL the time, and most of the time, the people ARE planning on just dumping the male and female together without any idea of how to spawn and raise bettas. It just gets frustrating after a while, so that's why you got the reaction you did... the people on this forum are great so don't take it personally. :) We also all love baby bettas, so if you do decide to breed bettas after you look into it more, we totally look forward to hearing about it. :flowers:

-_- Was anyone being rude? I thought everyone was very cool to you... considering you passed right by the several pinned topics that explain everything about Betta spawning, and they have no obligation to answer a question that has been asked 87362900 times.

Seriously, after being a member for over 1 year, a day hardly goes by that there is not several questions posted that are clearly explained in the pinned topics. No one is trying to be rude, they're just telling you to research, which you should definitely do months before spawning.

Your original post suggested you would, IMO.

Bettas are not livebearers. Say you hit the 500+ fry mark. Thats 500+ fry to take care of. Say you end up with a 1/2 males. Thats around 250 male bettas that need to be individually housed and cleaned every week. And which shop can take 250 male bettas off your hands when they can get them so cheaply from their supplier?

yes when i was quick to reply because you said about just putting her in with him and i was worried you were going to rush into it. As ohhfeeshy said the LFS wont be interested in taking that many off of you. Especially when they get VT's at about $0.60 each!

sorry that you feel this way but what you have to understand is that the bettas come first round here not personal feeling, you asked for advice and got it, just because you didn't like what you heard or took it the wrong way is still no excuse to talk to anybody like that, if you are really serious about breeding bettas then you will not find a better group of people so don't burn your bridges honey :good:
