hi everyone not sure if anyone has experience with these but i've seen these newts in my lfs called rock newts and cant find any info on them online, the ones ive seen look about 4 inches and it says on the label, rock newts (red spotted) and they have like paddle kind of tails.

in the shop they dont appear to have any platforms for air or anything but i dunno if they are completely aquatic or not if they need a dry platform how do u suggest i make one?

i would also like to know what fish would b suitable to keep with one of these (the tank is 20 gallons) i currently have 2 albino cory and one wagtail platy would any of these need to b taken out?

i presume fish which aren't predatory and not too big, not too small would b ideal, bristlenose plec? mayb sum tetra? a betta? also would an african dwarf frog b ok too?

these are individual ideas of course not all at once lol and any help on these particular fish and any other suggestions would b really gratefully accepted

sorry about the long post and thanks in advance for any help

Hi , don't know about mixing newts and fish as i have never done it. ZooMed make a floating logs for aquariums which can be used for turtles so imagine they would be ok for newts , you may have to lower the water level in your tank though , don't know if they need a land mass to walk on as such , i.e. part of your aquarium just havin lots of gravel or sand .....
Are they fire bellied newts????
Ask the shop for more info , if you;re not sure don't buy as this will cause problems in the future...
Impulse is a bad thing and expensive , trust me on that one im talking from experience ,,,, LOL
hope this helps a bit

hi thanks very much for te help, no there definately not either chinese or japanese fire bellied newts i seem to remember that thy're duller colours and have sort of paddle tails, ive not seen them anywhere

from research that ive done i think some fish will b okay providing that these newts aren't toxic in any way, i've read that some newts will b okay wiv peaceful fish which arent too big etc

as for the wood idea i think that sounds like a perfect option i seem to remember i saw wood like this in a terrapin tank in the same shop and will definately look into this.

thanks very much for the help, haha yeah i'm impatiant about these things too however i will definately ask in the shop about these particular newts and take there advice (with caution of cause lol)

thanks again

The hardest thing about keeping newts is temperature. They cannot survive long-term in a tropical tank. For maximum lifespan, they actually need the temperature in their tank to go down to the 50s in the winter.

At minimum stock him in an unheated tank with white clouds, gold barbs, or similar cooler water fish. Ideally the tank will be somewhere that gets drafty in the winter.

I am unsure about mixing newts with fish - If the fish can fit in the newts mouth it will become a snack and if the fish are of significant size they can pester the newt - but as to another question...do NOT mix newts and african dwarf frogs! Never mix two different species of reptiles/amphibians. They each have a different chemical make up that affects the surrounding water and are extremely sensitive to such chemicals.
If you care about the health and happiness of your amphibians, fish, reptiles and all tank mates...do not mix! African Dwarf frogs are highly compatible with guppies, neons and other tetras, bettas (most of the time) and other community fish.
hope this helps!
