Hello!

Today I rescued this beautiful guy from my local walmart. Even though he has only been in his new home a few hours, already his colour has gotten more vibrant and he is very active, flaring at his reflection. However, I noticed a very shimmery relfective spot around his gills, and was wondering if this was a bad thing. He is in a one gallon tank, filtered, water parameters are good. You can see in the pic below how the light reflects off the spot I am talking about :

Maybe this is just normal. I am not sure, but let me know! I would hate for him to be sick so soon after purchasing him :(

Here is another picture:

Please let me know what you think ASAP!

Jen

good luck with your guy! i did the same thing with my newest, there's a thread in the betta board on him. i hope he's okay. oh and if you want to use pictures, use the [*img][/*img] tags instead of <img src="***"> tags

It could just be his natural coloring. I have a fish that looks exactly like this, and it's just the way his coloring is.
However if it looks like their gold flecks, it could be "velvet". I'd say check out a few more betta pictures and try to compare yours with others.

*Best of Luck*

Its not very easy to tell from your pics, but as suggested look at pics of velvet and see if that matches.

Aww he looks lovely.

I rescued my Betta from a petshop :( He and 4 others were being kept in tiny tiny fry boxes, couldnt even move around. As I looked at them all hardly any had any fins left at all and some wounds. I spoke to the woman and she said they had all escaped the boxes last night and had been fighting  I thne pointed out why the hell dont she have them all in seprate tanks so they dont need to be kept in boxes like that, never got a answer. I offered to take one but wasnt paying as the state of them, she said the fins grow back but I pointed out yes but look at the body damage, who knows if they will survive. I took the one in the worst state with no fins just teeny treads hanging that could hardly be seen. Next time I looked they were all in seperate tanks and thriving. My Betta has since grown his fins back lovely and is quite active now :D

thank you for your help :good: i looked up some pics of betta velvet, and that doesnt seem to be what was wromg. I think that it is just his colouring! He has continued to perk up throughout the weekend, so thats a good sign!!

thanks again,

jen
