Hey all, just checked on my 7 fry in their seperate breeder and found 5 had died :( A few hours earlier they looked completely healthy and fine. This has happened three times now, what could the explanation be? I would be grateful for any ideas. Thanks.

........sorry, this could be a number of things:

.....Interbreeding........if the fry are from a long line of brother-sister or close relation breeding......they won't be as strong as more "natural" bred fry.

....Stress.......was the mother particularly stressed when she gave birth (and was it recently (hours)).......if so, they might not have been fully developed and ready to be born......

......If they have been alive for awhile......it could well be the water quality.....over feeding is probably the most common cause of poor water quality, particularly if this breeder tank is a very small tank.......it is harder to maintain good water quality in a much smaller tank.

Good luck though...............

Of those previously mentioned, I would say that by far the most likely is water quality in the breeder. But illness caused by poor water quality usually doesn't take out that many over just a few hours.

I'm really reaching for this one, but it also could be water temp, if the breeder is attached at the top of the tank near hot lights and there is poor water circulation through the breeder you could be cooking them and not realizing it?
