I got a new Vortex diatom filter the other day & I ran it for 1½ hrs in my 44gal tank & then for a little over an hour in my 29 gal. I might preface this with the fact that I had a diatomaceous earth filter back in the 70s & never killed any fish so do freak out. My question is as a rule of thumb, how long do you run it per gallon of tank? And you don’t have to get all excited like “OMG Don’t run it all day etc.” I know. I tried to tell a friend that barrowed my filter & ran it while he was gone to work & said his tank had never looked so great!!! He said “It looks like a crystal clear ice cube” I told him that he just signed his fish’s death warrant! Sure enough they all died 1 by 1. So with that said I have Googled but can’t find anything about run times. Only things like “I use it to polish my tank a couple times a month.”
