I know there is a lot of fishing tackle shops but i've never seen any LFS' or pet shops for that matter. I don't think i've ever looked though, it's not really the kind of thing you think of looking for while your there lol (atleast me anyways, i get blinded by all the little shiney things)

I think there is meant to be a pretty good one in bridlington which isnt that far from there, theres also a guy with a 10x4x4 tank full of peacock bass in bridlington somewhere but not sure where or who he is lol just seen the vids on youtube

There doesn't seem to be any shops in Whitby itself according to yellow pages. The nearest ones would seem to be absolute aquatics and tropical house, both in Redcar, and a couple of shops in Scarborough. Tropical house is a funny shop, different fish from other shops, lots of small tanks all with loads of plants and algae in them, but I've never had a bad fish from there. Absolute auqatics is fairly new, but back in January they only had run of the mill fish.

What about Big Al's in Whitby? I was in there yesterday, and they seem to be okay, other than the fact that the fish/plant room at the back is very dark! Not much in the way of great plants when I was there though. They are not as big as the Scarborough location, but better than nothing, perhaps.

BE AWARE that both these shops in Redcar are TERRIBLE.

Went to both of these a few weeks back and they are both horrendous.

I honestly cant belive you buy fish from tropical house! Its disgusting in there. I think the owner has just given up on trying to keep the place respectable. They had cichlids kept in normal tropical conditions, loads of the tanks are snail infested. You can barely see in to some of them there is that much algae on the glass.

Absolute aquatics have dirty tanks filled with dead fish, bettas stuck to filters in every other tank where they have been put in with filters which are too powerful, tanks on the top level which look like have never been cleaned....as for their "display" tank of discus when you walk in..... if thats how they keep all their fish then its not a place for me.

I've only been in absolute aquatics twice. The first time was a week after they opened when most of the tanks were still empty. The second time they had more stocked tanks, but only the same fish as everywhere else has. On that occasion there were no sick or dead fish. But only one visit after they were running properly isn't a good enough sample to make a judgement on.

With tropical house, I got fish from there when I first started keeping fish many years ago and didn't know what good shops looked like. All the fish I've had from them have lived for years. My last visit in january was the first time I'd been in about three years and it did seem to have gone downhill. They weren't that bad years ago, and I wasn't sure if january was just an odd bad time. From what you are saying, it is now typical. I do agree with what you say about inapproprate conditions - and they were selling pangasius. But I'd still rather get fish from there than peter barratts - had bad experiences with their fish despite how clean the tanks look.

maidenhead aquatics at stokesley is very good..

I didnt know there was a maidenhead up here until recently but stokesley is a pain in the butt to get to unless you have a car. Maybe when i pass my test i can pay a visit. My tutor gets the majority of our fish stuff from there for college. she said its quite a small shop though?

I tend to do all my fish shopping at Billingham Aquatic Centre (in teesside) if i can help it though, they aren't too bad a shop
