This might be a silly question, but I have noticed in local Vietnamese restaurants there are often large tanks with bright, interestingly colored fish, usually around the size of a large oscar. They always seem relatively interested in people, or possibly in just being fed, because they generally will swim up to you when you are near the tank. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that these fish tend to be kept at Vietnamese restaurants, and if anyone knows what they are... They're really pretty and I'm just curious.

Happy New Year, everyone :drink:

Hmm, I did a Google image search on tilapia and the fish it turned up do not look quite the same, though maybe somewhat similar. Good guess :)

My local Oriental reataurant has them too.Colours mostly orange or red and white, like goldfish. They look like giant fat goldfish, Oscar sized but they have "fangs" hanging down on either side of their mouths which make them look like vampire goldfish!Possibly some kind of carp?

Red devil cichlids etc.?
No definitely NOT any kind of cichlid -wrong body shape and fins. These look more like carp/koi type fish with fang like whiskersdo carp/koi have catfish type whiskers? I keep cichlids and know them quite well. There are also very crowded, 6 fish in an 80cm cube including 3 oscar sized ones and no hiding places or plants. Cichlids would have massacred each other by now and these fish have been there over 3 years with no deaths.

I was guessing at the fish the OP described not yours.
