when / if i get my new tank, I have set my heart on Vieja synspila. Anyone bred them? or any info/experiences woul be geat.

Very nice fish.
Unfortunatly, these brutes get LARGE, im taking 12" + in a tank, a full grown male can potentially get larger still...

Youd be looking for a 5' tank by 2' min to house a pair, but there are a few members of the Vueja genus which stay smaller and are as colourful, or if not, more colourful...
maybe you could look at vieja maculicada.
Dan...

Indeed, fully grown they can reach 14" in captivity.

Deary me though, they're so attractive.

There's some info here and a nice pic..

What size is your new tank bud?

Yeah yeah, thats the one. lovely eh? my new tank is 7ft x 2ft x 2ft

Beautiful !

Tanks definitely big enough :good:

Not too far off from my Severum (avatar pic). They get to 10" but mine is full grown at 7.5"

Apparently they also need alot of veggies in order to get that nice red coloring too.

There are two good sized ones at the LFS here in SE Ohio (USA). Pretty fish. I'd love to give them a home if we weren't alreay tight on space as it is.

Good read. Thanks Ryan :good:

I really love the phylogenetic/biogeography/geologically-calibrated stuff. Just a nice, complete piece of work. Though, I'm glad I'm not involved with fish (especially New World cichlid) taxonomy. Poor Vieja....

Ironically, we just got a 6" synspilum last night. There were a pair in the LFS until just a few days ago. I think someone bought the larger male, and the female(?) was left behind, all alone in a 75gallon. We walked past the tank last night, and she made a B-line to us, as if it weren't for the glass she would have jumped into our arms. We couldn't *not* take her home. Actually, we took her home with her home: A big ol' wrecked ship decoration she was living in. :)

Absolutely beautiful fish... though now our need for another tank has gone from "pressing" to "ASAP", since she's quarantined in the 29g (her shear size scaring the you-know-what out of our tiger barbs. Talk about TIGHT schooling! ). Gotta couple leads via CraigsList on a much bigger tank for her and my "rearrange the cichlids" project.
