Hi folks,

Thank you for everyone who voted for my aquarium in the November Tank of the Month contest. My tank came in first, but you should also check the other three amazing submissions. I take the opportunity to share a video I recently made of the tank:

The video looks blurry at some points and it does not do justice to the colors of fish and plants, but I thought I would share anyway.

I am excited with the recent upgrade from a 55 gallon to a low-tech 75 gallon. Things are now stable and I have solved a persistent algae problem. Some of the rainbowfish are juveniles and I can't wait to see them grow and color up.

Thank you!

love the video, got a question for the OP... are your panda garra pretty old??? I'm thinking maybe like you can tell a dog is getting long in the tooth, by the grey around it's muzzle... if they may lose some color, as the get to old age???

I have a group of 5 panda's in my Hillstream tank, that are 2-3 years old, and they have quite a bit of color in their fins and tail... just wondering if they'll lose that color in old age, or may be from a different area, and the color actually varies a little???

Thanks @Magnum Man. Yes, Panda Garras change colors as they age. Here is video from the same fish in another tank, right after I got them 5 years ago (you can jump to 50 seconds in the video):

They used to have vertical bars that faded away with time, although they still have beautiful red fins. Panda garras are supposed to live for 4-6 years, so it is sad to realize that they are at the end of their lives. Very gregarious fish, it is a lot of fun to watch them.

Do you turn the filter/ pump down at night to reduce the current?
Whilst rainbowfish and many fish enjoy swimming into the current, they also need time to rest and recover. I had powerheads on timers in my rainbowfish tanks and they ran for an hour several times a day.

Hi @Colin_T , I never turn the filter or pump down. In my experience, a good water flow is essential to algae control. For this tank, I have the spray bar of the Fluval 407 canister's outtake pointed to the surface. In the opposite side of the tank, I have a small powerhead pumping water in the opposite direction, pointed at the front glass, ensuring a good water flow and no significant dead spots. A good water flow does not mean an excessive flow. Most areas of the tank are not significantly disturbed and the fish have plenty of room to rest. As you can see in the video, with the exception of the vallisneria at the top, the plants are not moved by the water circulation.
