I have a very sick angel fish and I am at my wits end over what to do about it. Let me start with a little background of my situation. I have had this angel for well over a year now. When I bought him he was already fully grown, about the size of the palm of my hand.

About 2 months ago he got stuck behind his spawning slate while I was at work. He was trying to get some fallen wigglers and squeezed into a space that was way to small for him. When I got home and rescued him his fins were in tatters, and both his eyes were scratched very badly. I added melafix and did daily water changes to aid him in his healing. He appeared to get completely better from this, but now I am having my doubts. A month after this happened I moved houses. The angel is too big for any of my nets, so I had to chase him into a bowl to move him. Not long after the move I noticed he was showing symptoms of hole in the head. I resumed the daily water changes, using prime to dechlorinate the water, but that hasn't seemed to have helped. I feed a variety of foods to the angels, including pellet food, frozen blood worms, on occasion frozen brine shrimp, and vegetables such as peas and zucchini.

Last week I tried to find metronidazole or any medication with it as the main ingredient, to no avail. The last few days it seemed to be getting better, but this morning I woke up to him looking like this:

I have no idea why his mouth looks like that! I really need to know what I can do to help him. He is one of my most favourite fish and I can't stand the thought of losing him. If I have to drive across the city to get him medication I will, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

This is my stats:

Tank size: 55G, heavily planted, gravel/fluorite substrate
pH: 7.0
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: <5
tank temp: 80

Tank inhabitants: 2 angels, 1 gourami, 5 otos, and 6 Boesmani rainbows

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): none, the tank has had the current inhabitants for well over a year

Exposure to chemicals: none

He appears to be deteriorating fast, what can I treat this with?

His head appears to be lightening up, but I think it is his skin peeling off. If I look closely into the red around his mouth I can make out air bubbles inside it. He is remaining at the top of the water and barely swimming at all.

I seriously don't think he is going to last another day without some help.

He's not sounding good, sounds like his immune system has shut down, i would get him going on an antibiotic like tetracycline.
.

Sorry posted that on the wrong thread.
I would go with tetracycline if you can issolate him.

I can not isolate him at this time. I suppose I could pull all the other tank inhabitants, but he is too big to go in any of my other tanks. My hospital tank is not big enough for him.

I don't know if I can get tetracycline, I have looked for that in the past as well. Would Maracyn I and or II work? Perhaps a combo of both? He is not eating, so the med would have to be able to be absorbed into his skin.

I am very against treating a tank with medication if I don't have to which is why I have not treated it yet. I feel terrible because I feel like if I had found metronidazole last week he wouldn't be looking as awful as he does now.

Maracyn one and two, increase aeration, good luck, bless him.

I added antibiotic to the tank yesterday. Unfortunately today he looks a lot worse. The grey slime that was on his head yesterday is gone, and the things that were sticking out of his head are gone too. In their place are very large holes that I doubt will ever heal. His fins are tattered and completely losing their colour.

I am starting to consider euthanizing my angel :(. I don't think he is going to recover and I really don't want him to suffer. I know for a fact that I personally could never do this to my favourite fish, so I am going to have to ask my husband to do it for me. Of the acceptable methods of euthanasia, which is the best for a fish that is about the size of the palm of my hand?

Bless him, how bad does he look, could try another days or two, if you think he's had enough, put him in a container, fill a jug of very cold water up, add some ice cubes and pour over the fish.
Ive done it myself and it quick, sorry bless him.

I went to the LFS today and he was kind enough to sell me 5 days worth of Tetracycline. I am going to try that.

At this time he is swimming head up most of the time. The wounds look bad, but I am holding out hope. The redness from yesterday is all but gone, and the swelling has gone down quite a bit. Some of his wounds look quite deep, but hopefully with antibiotics the infection will go away.

I have removed the gourami from the tank as he appeared to be bothering the angel quite badly, the rainbows seem to leave him alone.

His mate has not left his side for more than a couple of minutes at a time, I think she is taking care of him as best she can.

I am going to continue with the daily water changes, and the tetracycline. If he doesn't survive this I can console myself with his offspring. I have 6 fry remaining that I will be keeping from my Christmas spawn, the rest have made their way to new owners.

Good luck, what a sad situation.

:-( I am sad to say my angel has passed away, with his mate at his side. I knew the end was coming, so I have already dug him a grave under one of the apple trees in my yard.

Thank you, Wilder, for caring. He was my first fish, and will be missed like no other fish here. :rip: :byebye:

Sorry bless him R.I.P. how the other angel bless her is she coping will losing her mate, so sad.

She has been looking for him since last night. I have 6 of her fry in another tank, when they are bigger I will be introducing her to a couple of them.

Bless her so sad, makes me want to cry.
