Hey guys,

I had a great day at work and then I came home to find three of my favorite fish passed away.  My clownfish, six line wrasse and my fire shrimp died. I do feel fortunate that my green carpet and one of the clownfish that hosted it made it threw this nightmare so far.

The suction cups on my heater lost suction, the heater fell loose, floated where the bottom piece was sticking out a bit which meant the temperature sensor could not dictate the temperature.  The heater kept heating the tank to an insane temperature which my poor fishes couldn't handle.  By the time I came home from work it was too late.

As of right now, the green carpet and his clownfish look like they are doing good but they are the only guys that survived.  My plan is to overtime introduce some new friends and hopefully have a better outcome.

Point being I think everyone should check the suction cups on their heaters from time to time and make sure it is secure with full suction so this type of thing can be prevented.  I replaced the heater and now I am putting all the heaters on the front of my tanks.  Chances are I am the only one this has happened too but it should be known that it is possible.

Oh, really sorry to hear that :( RIP to the fishies.

That's a rotten bit of luck!

That is a decent tip to pass onto others to try and avoid this happening. Thanks.

Sorry for your losses :(

So sorry for your losses Kev!

That's awful! I'm sorry you lost so many.  :(

Sorry to hear that, what make of heater was it? all mine sink if the suction cups fail, quite a few also turn off if they are out of the water, Newatt make a very good polymer heater that won't crack or float not sure if you can get this in the US? or Eheim Jaegers are also good as they are heavy heaters they are expensive heaters but they last a long time and will prevent accidents so a great investment

That's a crappy thing to come home to. Sorry to hear it. I lost a couple clowns and was pretty choked about it. Amazing fish.

Aww man, I'd be devastated if that happened to me.

Geesh, what a thing to have happen.  Thank you for explaining how it happened, for our benefit.

The way my heater is in, if the suction cups let go the wire is tight and will hold it up.  I just checked to be sure!
