Very Ill Mbu Puffer

I’ll give you some free advice seeing as you like to promote that. The 2 shops you keep raving about I can sum up in one word crap swallows and fishy friends are crap and the people that work there are awful.

I can back mark up on that as these are my LFS also

realy confused now !!! just done another 90% water change..and ammonia creeping up again fast...all filters are working ok...ph is 7 to 7.2...but have just put some ph up in...wow really dont know what is going on here...2 major 90% water changes done ina week...and 20% daily to keep the ammonia down...cannot work this one out

Cause your tank is overstocked, I've only kept bettas and guppies, but I looked up those fish you listed and compared them to your tank size, and even I can tell...your over stocked buddy.
And the some of the fish, mainly the puffer, shouldn't be 'couch potatoes" and even though it's keeping him from doing damage to your other fish, it's not natural for him, which means something may have been going on a while.
He maybe be reallly stressed, which is why he's not showing his natural behavior, and that also may be why he has suddenly become sick due to the ammonia whilst the other fish are fine(or so they seem)

You should consider rethinking your stocking, and save your self the heart-ache of having this happen to another fish further down the road.
It would be better for you and the fish in the long run(not to mention all the money you've spent on medicine)

Dear Sharon
I have now read all replies and comments on this thread.
Sadly I see many comments telling you how you have done wrong etc.
I dont see this situation in this way.
Firstly we should have given you some constructive advise on how to procede
with the aim of helping your Mbu regain its health.
I feel that there are very few comments that address this issue.
Secondly having read the whole thread, we should give you tips
and advice, partly encouraging you to review the aquarium size and
offering the benefit of shared knowledge of keeping Mbu puffers.
I personally applaud you patience and believe your persistence to
find help amid the barrage of negative comments, shows that you are
truly engaged in trying to help a loved pet and learn from others.
I hope wholeheartedly your puffer survives and is restored to full health soon.
In hindsight i think you may agree that if you use the initals LFS in the place
of real store names, there may be a little less spiteful reaction from some on this
forum.
I offer you both my best wishes.

Nice letter, are you going to print it off and mail it to her?...

thankyou so much johnypuf & sharoncc....Riley is still here....but not a lot of change ...still not able to swim....i dont know how long to leave him like this...its not humane....

Ace Of Spades ...you realy are a nasty piece of work ..you have nothing to say that i want to hear...so stop waisting your time....

From my experiences when a senstive fish is subjected to ammonia and/or nitrite. (You said it was very high, but how high was it. Also do you know what you nitrite was.) Damage is done. Often the fish will survive initially and you will be able to get the water stats under control. Yet shortly after this period the fish goes into rapid decline. Ammonia is toxic to fish, think of it the same way as if a person came in contact with something highly toxic. They go into rapid decline and need emergency medical care. If they do survive they will most likely never be as healthy as they were before, and will probably feel the effects of the toxin for the rest of their life.

So, IMO your fish has been basically poisened, there isn't much you can do :-( . Also as someone else said the behavior you described for the puffer is not normal. Puffers are suppose to be aggresive fish that do not mix well with other fish. Saying that he gets along fine with them and is a "couch potato" means something was not right to start with. A healthy puffer should act like a normal puffer.

As people said you are overstocked this is very clear by the sudden water quality issues you are having. A overstocked tank can be properly cycled like yours was, but when something goes wrong it goes very wrong. You cycled crashed somehow and your fish produce lots and lots of waste. This piles up rapidly and water quality goes down the drain, then the fish start to die. In a properly stocked tank if the cycle crashes it takes much longer for the ammonia to pile up

If you are only going to listen to what you "WANT" to hear, whats the point of being here then :good:

hey this is the internet ppl will and do say things you dont like you came here and asked for ppl's views and your getting them so no suprise hey
again hope your fishy gets better
scot :good:

and ace isnt nasty hes just to the point lol

Under gravel filters = mostly bad, in case it is not properly maintained it might be the cause of your problems...

also - what mark said.

And yes, that tank is indeed too small, it's just 8 fish, but it's way too small for either the aro or the puffer.

Ace...I have to say that in this case, there have been very few posts that are worth "hearing"...Rude critisism, as opposed to constructive criticism. Sharon, I suggest you reply only to posters that are trying to be helpful...not those who are doing their best to aggravate the situation.

yes sharoncc i agree..and will take that advice...thanks again

prankster705...yes i do have under gravel filters...you could be right...they may hve broke down...but still have 2 internal filters..the big one the runs along the top of the tank that come with the tank...and an eheim under the tank...i have a lot of filters as riley is a very messy eater...

just struggling with seeing him on his side....

i will be getting a bigger tank...was going to be the end of next year...9ft...but i think i will get it before xmas....as i dont want this happening again...and also if riley does make it he will need perfect water all the time...so cant take any risk's...
