Hi guys, ive had my tank for nearly 6 months now and thanks to this forum everything has gone well, however i noticed fungus growing on a piece of leftover flake food 2 days ago, and now one of my keyhole cichlids has red fin areas, and its rotting the fins, making them opaque (keyhole cichlid fins are usually very transluscent/transparent from what i can tell from the other 3.

It also has whispy white circles on it around 1cm in diameter on both sides of the body, they look kind of like burn blisters but white and whispy.

Is this fungus?

the keyhole is looking terribly ill...EDIT:It appears to look like cotton wool fungus, the strange this is only he has it, and my water quality is kept perfect at all times, i non-fish cycled, and i check my water levels before i do the water change and its always 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 25 nitrates ish.

Apparently cotton wool fungus is caused by VERY bad water quality????

My test kit isnt faulty because i have used it via mixing ammonia in water to test it

Most fish health problems are related to poor water quality. If the water is ok then the fish has a bacterial infection (causing the red fins) and could well have a fungal infection too (the white stuff on its side).
However, if you have food rotting in the tank and growing fungus I would say there is a water quality issue. Any left over fish food should be removed as soon as the fish have finished feeding. It should not be left in the tank long enough to grow fungus because as it breaks down in the water it releases ammonia that will cause stress to the fish.

Try doing a couple of partial (50-75%) water changes using dechlorinated water with a similar temp & PH to the tank water. Gravel clean the tank and make sure the filter is working correctly. If the problem is still the same or worse after the water change, then add a broad spectrum medication like "Waterlife Protozin or Myxazin"

the fungus grows within 1 hour, and theres floating fungus spores everywhere, i noticed this when i did a massive gravel vac two weeks ago, i went into town and got fungus medication (dont have any broad spectrum products, im from UK and not many fish places around :( ) and another API test kit

Still 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, this is why im so confused, my tank is a cess pool of fungus and bacteria but the water quality is perfect

to make matters even more annoying is my phantom tetras are laying eggs and being eaten.

I thought tetras need excellent water quality to lay eggs????

Oh also ive been treating king british fin rot and fungus treatment for 30 hours now, and not only has there been no progress with this medication, but now all 4 of my cichlids are catching it, the other fish appear totally immune to this stuff though.

Ive taken carbon and zeolite filter out as well which can absorb the treatment and stop its effects
