Not Really Funny

My SAE just randomly died. He was doing fine, eating the algae I've got on the tank walls and hiding around whenever the lights were bright (I guess he's nocturnal
). However, a couple days ago, I found him lying upside down on the bottom of the tank, completely out of the blue. No other signs that he was going to die, I just found him there. I nudged him and he moved a short distance away and spasmed a little, but otherwise did nothing. The next morning, he was dead.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? None of the other fish had been bothering him, he was the most peaceful critter in the tank. I have fine ammonia/nitrite levels, temperature is all right, nothing out of the ordinary. Also, none of the other fish are acting strange. I'm just really boggled by all this.
