After 40 years of keeping tropical fish and going through at least 50 tanks I finally had my first tank leak. Glad I noticed it soon. It happened to the 10 gallon tank where my female Betta Christy lives. In a rush to empty that tank to replace it with a 15 gallon I placed Christy in a cup of her water and hung the cup inside the tank/home of my young male Betta Puppy to keep her at the right temperature. Puppy swam right to her and they were eying each other all day and Christy sprouted those vertical bands that shows she wants to mate. The interesting observation was that after a while, Puppy settled down, Christy was quite settled the whole time, and he just parked himself right next to her and they just kind of hung out together all day. Makes me wonder if maybe I could keep these two in the same tank. Any comments from those that keep a male and a female in the same tank would be appreciated.

Well, I have seen these vertical mating bands on the females many times but never as wide, bright and dominant as these were. Those bands were practically glowing. I took a few pictures which I will post after I transfer them but they were from my Cell phone and did not come out good at all.

Anyway, the good news is she has settled into her new larger home very well and is happy and she and Puppy are flirting with each other more often throughout the day now. And Puppy, who really is still very young, has finaly realized there is more to life than food. LOL! :)

You really are not supposed to keep them in the same tank unless it is heavily planted and you are ready to remove one of them and you can watch them almost all day long, it is not recommended to keep male and a female together unless you are trying to breed them, I don't think you should put them in together a lot of things can happen if you do

That's what I thought too but I believe there are 1 or 2 posters here that actually do have a male and female that live together. How fantastic is that. I'd love a situation like that.

I think I saw one that had a male in a tank with 20 females. I have heard that if you are going to have them in the same tank, it should not one on one. I heard that 1 male, MANY females could work

Yeah it may work, but is it worth the risk??
Yeah someone on here has 2 males in with about 20+ females but it's a huge tank and very well planted....

That's why I sai "could." I personally wouldn't do it, but then again, the one male I would think of getting a lady for is SUPER aggressive. I cannot keep him with any fish.
