Today I went to the local supermarket and got some cucumber and peas (par-boiled) for my two fantails and pearl scale fish as i was told these vegetables were good for them, so i got home washed the veg and chopped the up in mouth size pieces :) droped them in to the tank and had a go it it but spat it out and not go for a second try. As anyone got some advice in feeding fish with veg and have you got to chop it up fine or mouth pieces?

Thank's
John

yesterday i was told to add the cucumber in slices and weigh it down with a plant weight or just push a metal spoon through it. It's common enough for the fish to reject the veg. initially but they might pick at if you keep trying. Just replace it after 24 hours (use a net if possible as it might break into pieces otherwise) before it starts to decompose. so i did this and put a spoon though the sliced cucumber and this morning the center of the cucumber as had a big hole in, so i know my fish like the center part of a cucumber. If you have not tried this give it ago.

Have you tried Kale or Spinach? Both are jam-packed with nutrients and goldfish just love them... all my goldies need is a whiff of kale and they come wiggling over from every corner of the tank.

Also don't forget the fruit... goldfish go nuts for oranges in particular.

Thank's for your kind information about foods :) i will try these and see what happens, i have never hard of Kale will the local supermarket have them, like tesco or asda. Do you use the orange like the cucumber.

Any supermarket should have kale in the produce section, usually near the cabbage and other 'leafies'. With orange I just devest a piece of its skin and drop it in. Then I eat the rest :)

Haven't tried orange and kale but my goldfish ate half a small potato microwaved for 1 minute which I put inthe tank for my plec! Fish will also eat courgettes and cucumber weighed down with a teaspoon

Goldfish don't get potatoes and kale in the wild, so why should they get it in captivity? The nearest they get to vegetation in the wild is algae and plants.

I can't say I would feed my goldfish potatos but... kale is a plant!

More importantly I think its crucial that we provide such veggies for their vitamin content. In the wild they don't eat whitefish meal or mackerel wither and yet those remain preferred ingredients for both prepared and gel goldfish food. Why? Because they are just different sources of the same nutrients that goldfish would obtain from bugs in the wild.

Even then, you do have to take some things into consideration such as if you feet your goldfish chicken they clearly won't be able to uptake nutrients as well from it, let alone digest it. But the difference from a mackerel and a pond minnow or between kale and anachris is too slight to observe in my opinion. As long as its either a leafy green, a fish, a crustacean or a bug of some sort its all good as far as I'm concerned. No hair splitting necessary.

Of course all this is avoiding the fact that there are no goldfish in the wild!
