I love val and want to put it in my tanks. The problem is I have soft water. I keep seeing that it likes hard water. Can it be grown in soft water? What could I do for it to keep it happy in my water?

I would say Vallis didn`t thrive in my tank, but that is relative. It is a 3.4WPG EI tank and the Vallis had everything it could possibly want, and it was also the first plant I ever saw pearl. Nevertheless, compared to my other plants it didn`t grow as quickly.

Without the light and ferts, you may struggle with soft water, but why not give it a try. No two tanks are the same.

I left on or two of the healthier runners in there for a while and they started to thrive, so maybe after a little struggle at first you could end up with some healthy Vallis, as per Darwin.

Give it a go, I say.

Dave.

I have giant val and the smaller val growing well in my soft water discus tank, i use diy co2 now, but it grew ok without it i also have laterite under the sand and use flourish ferts. oh and 3.5 watts per gallon. I`d give it ago, you never know

Round my mums house(where i am at now) i have a 2ft tank with straight vallis in.Last summer there were only 5,now there is about 30,varying in different sizes.I don't have co2.I have about 1WPG.And my water is HARD.This plant grows and sets of runners like wild fire in hard water so really it must do petty crap in a low pH?!

I had it in very hard water, I have changed the tank to soft water and the vallis is doing fine not as fast, but it is still growing too fast and flowering the Ph 6.7 and KH of 3-4.

Thank you! I am very glad to hear that it can be done. I have eco-complete and laterite substrate, and am planning on getting better lighting and co2 soon. After I get those sorted I will find the plants and get them ordered.
Thanks :good:
