UV sterilizers can be used to kill suspended algae. They will also damage or kill any microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, etc. that pass by the light.

All dependant with your watt sizes and flow rate. Just make sure you get one proper for your tank .. or bigger never hurt
I use a laguna powerclear one and it works amazingly... bulbs usually last around 6 months at this point you should buy a new one.. about 30$ i found.... mine just burnt out on me at 8 months.
