I have just noticed two of my four Corys have the first signs of Whitespot on them. Coincidentally, I have an AquaEl external filter on order which comes with a UV steriliser built in. Would the steriliser kill off the Whitespot without any other treatment?

What I would like advice on is how long can I leave my fish before they start to suffer (they are still very active and feeding)? I ask this because I do not want to dose my tank with chemicals if it is not necessary, but am still waiting for the arrival of the filter.

If I do have to start dosing straight away, can anyone recommend a brand readily available in UK LFS that is also safe for invertibrates?

Cheers in advance, Dave.

Thanks for that, Wilder!

I want to get rid of this stuff pronto, which means nipping out to my LFS tomorrow to buy one off the shelf (ironic really, seeing as I suspect they sold me an infected fish), rather than waiting for mail order. Are they all more or less effective and safe for inverts?

Once I am rid of the disease, will my UV sterilser prevent this from happening again?

On another note, I thought it was stressed fish that caught Whitespot, yet my Corys have always been happy. My tank parameters and substrate are ideal for them.

I shall order some of that Protozin for the future.

Uv sterlizers do get rid of things in the water but once attached to the fish no.
That med is meant to be safe by waterlife with invertbrates.
Don' forget to turn temp up to 30 and increase aeration in the tank.
Corys are not prone to whitespot.

Yes I will definitely turn up the heater thermostat. As for aeration, I run a hi tech tank (sounds impressive, huh?), so that is out of the question for me. Still, the green water could hide the Whitespot.

Thanks for your help.

As long as there enough surface movement should be ok.
You could move the corys out if you have another spare tank.

 Yes, how many have you got.

Sterlizers will do nothing once the parasite it attached to the fish so you will need a med.

Before I went on holiday (23rd december), my fish were infected with ich. As I couldn't be here to treat them, I added a UV steriliser to the tank (many thanks Smithrc for coming to my rescue), and when i returned today, the fish that were previously infected with ich, are no longer infected with ich.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that in my experience, the ich will not remain on the host when a UV steriliser was added. It was always my udnerstanding that the white cysts came away after a time anyway...

Don't use uv sterlizers so couldn't tell you to be honest.
Some info here.
What can I kill with a UV sterilizer?
UV sterilizers will destroy parasites such as Ich during the new born, free swimming life cycle stage.
NOTE: They do not kill or remove the Ich parasites once attached to the fish. UV Sterilizers can be used with other methods to treat Ich. UV Sterilizers will kill free floating algae. It will not kill algae that is stuck to your glass or imbedded in your live rock. It needs to go through the UV sterilizer to be zapped.

 Yes, how many have you got.

Wives or tanks?

One wife - one too many.

One 120l tank plus one 240l in the pipeline - several too few.

I have noticed that the company I ordered my filter off have billed me, so it may arrive tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Ok lol, good luck.
