Uv Lights

just found out that my uv light is not working not sure for how long its not bin working but ive notice that the algae has beeen starting to take hold quite quick.
could this be to the fact that its not been working?
i am going to replace it but was just wantin gto know if i didnt have one what would be the difference?

Sure could be... I've shut mine off over the summer cause the flippin thing heats up my water too much and have been battling cyano and dinos because of it.
