Hi

Our platy's dont seem to be so shockingly bright as they appeared in the shop when we first saw them, even at night time..do shops use a UV light in the tank to make them look better, if so is this ok?? I have a white halogen bulb i believe.....

Thanks

L

How long have the fish been in your tank? If it hasn't been long it could just be stress. It also could just be a stressful tank. What is the WPG because some fish (not sure about platys) can be flushed of color with too much lighting.

They have only been in there since saturday. not sure about the WPG, its a 96 litre tank with halogen light running from end to end...

As discussed in my 'triple posted' fishy lovin post, I have discovered that i have 3 males and one female in the tank so I reckon it may well be a stressful tank at the moment! (for her anyway!!)

Seriously considering taking some males back to the shop....

Yeah, I don't think taking a male or two back and getting some females would hurt. They are still acclimating if they have only been in the tank for 3-4 days. So it most likely is stress induced from a new tank!

on the bulbs it will say what wattage they are simple divide the numbe rof gallons by the number of watts n bobs ya uncle

i think 96 litres is around 20 gallons using the working out of 1 gallon = 4.75 litres

The WPG should not matter, it's the kelvin of the lights. Typical aquarium lights are normally sold between 6000K - 10,000k. At 10,000K and higher, the colors appear to be more neutral. As you get closer to 6000K, the lights appear to be more yellow. Also, some aquariums stores use actinic lights, which tend to show more blue, almost fluorescent in color.

OK the bulb wasnt easy to decipher... it says. 25/50hz /230 / 1 x 18 w/k

which im assuming is 18watts right?!?! who knows?!?

if it is then 20 % 18 = 1.1 WPG.... Not sure if thats right... anyway Im guessing the tank light is going to be fine, paid a LOT of money for it and its a Jewel one which Ive heard lots of good things about...

Can anyone tell anything from those details in respect to what crazie.eddie mentioned, would they look less bright under this bulb?!?!

Well if it is 18 watts and a 20 gallon tank then the WPG would be less than 1.0 which is very low. The WPG would matter to the fish because the watt intensity flushes fish color... kelvin wouldn't.

It's not too bright at all.

cool, well Ill see how they go until the weekend (next chance to take some back) they seem happier than when they first went in so by the weekend they should be stress free... you never know the males may be bored of her by then...ther is such a thing as 'too much of a good thing!' :shifty:

It could simply be because they are under different lighting. If your light is incandescent (a bulb ) rather than flourescent (a tube ) it can be hard to determine the kelvin rating. If it's a tube it will have a brand and should also have it's kelvin rating printed on it. You can buy replacement tubes with a choice of kelvin rating. You also need to remember that shops tend to have lighting set to enhance the colours of the fish to entice people to buy them :)

WPG has little effect on your fish colouring unless it's washing the colours out due to being very bright. The lower the kelvin rating the redder the light, the higher it is, the bluer the light. 6,500k is usually referred to as daylight.

Wow you guys know your stuff! :) Much appreciated

Im thinking the kelvin rating was very low in the shop then as the little red platys were incredibly bright, dont get me wrong they are still a beautiful red.... just seemed to 'glow' a lot more in the shop...

My bulbs are 10000K and they are very blue.
