UV filters....do you just put them in a tank and it shines UV light? Or do they have water flowing though it?

They have flow going through them and the light is contained. I've never looked into them that much, since they really are not needed at all for a healthy tank.

Basically the UV bulb sits inside a glass "quartz" tube which is inside a sealed container, usually you need a pump (unless its inside an external filter) to run water through the unit past the outside of the tube.

In your average freshwater tank though, they aren't really worthwhile IMO

I have one built into my filter, like the rest they aren't really worth while but I do run mine anyway and I find my water seems to be a lot clearer if ran 24/7.

You can get them built into a filter, on the filter hoses and internal ones which act as mini filters. Perhaps useful if you are a breeder but if you need UV to keep your fish safe you might be doing something wrong.

I'm just going to be a contrarian and say that they are great if you have a green water problem. I don't run my all the time. Its packed up now but will come out if I ever get the green water again.

yes but thats the reason why they are worthwhile, green water shouldn't really be an issue unless the tank is positioned in an inappropriate place such as opposite a window or in a conservatory

Ive one in the pond outdoors and brilliant for keeping green water at bay.
