Utricularia Graminifolia

Ummm tropica, your LFS should be able to get shipments from there? At least one of my LFS have it. I also remember someone in France having some they were willing to part with :S

Not alot of use I know, sorry.

AquaEssentials look like they now have some in stock......

......or failing that I got an order of 6 pots through Birstall garden centre, it's not listed on their site, but if you quote the Tropica catalogue number (No 049B) then they can order it, cant always guarantee Tropica have it available though !

Both of the above can accept the order online and deliver in the UK. I've had plants delivered by both and not had any problems, (although I collect mine in person from Birstall as it's just around the corner) !

It's an excellent plant, but a bit delicate if you have any bottom feeders in your tank. Even small Corydoras will mess it up. Until it got properly established even my Amano shrimp would uproot it on a regular basis !

Thanks, i overlooked aqua essentials, they have some. I have some bristlenose`s so i won`t add them to my new tank till the plants get going. i like riccia but not sure i want the maintenance. will this plant grow on wood as well?
Thanks Angel

Angelmouse,

I've got no experience of BN's and UG, but I'd be very careful with them, even after the U. graminifolia gets established !

I've not tried it attached to wood, but I'm sure I've seen it mentioned on a website somewhere (sorry, I cant remember exactly where).

Will this plant carpet quickly, i`ll be using 2x nurafin co2 and 2.5 wpg lighting. Also using sand/laterite substrate. I want a carpet at the front with hair grass behind it. i like the idea of having a cave covered with plants. also thinking of using Apongeton ulvaceus and hm, can the hm grow tall as i was thinking of having it in background, but i know people use it as a carpeting plant as well.
Thanks Angel

Well I'm certainly no expert on U. graminifolia, having only grown it for a couple of months, however ......

How quickly it carpets will all depend on the conditions, Tropica's site says it will carpet in 6 - 8 weeks. But it will depend on your lighting, disolved CO2 level and fertilising regime.

I have about 4wpg over my 60cm tank, with 30 - 35ppm CO2 andADA substrate and ADA ferts and it is doing very well, I've had it in there for a couple of months, but thinned it out recently when I reworked the foreground in the tank. It's already recovering well.

From what I know about the plant it will grow quite well with lower light/CO2 etc, but just grows a bit slower.
It should carpet eventually, but it will take time !

As for your HM, that can be kept low by regular trimming, but if left unchecked will grow in excess of 10cm. It depends how high you want your background plants to be. 10 - 15cm and you should be OK.
Either way there are lot of options for background plants.

Also, regarding the BN's. Here's what Tropica say about it .....
" Utricularia graminifolia is relatively fragile and thus, it should not be kept with fishes with burrowing behaviour."

Whilst BN's may not actually 'burrow', anything that roots around on the bottom of the tank could cause it problems.

Edit to my earlier post: It wasn't U. graminifolia I saw grown on bogwood, it was glosso and Lilaeopsis brasiliensis ! - My mistake, must drink more coffee before posting :S

Hi All,

I’ve just acquired some Utricularia graminifolia for my tank, I had to buy 6 plants as that was the minimum order, I now have two that I don’t require and I’m trying to sell on, I know that sound bad but I can’t afford to give them away as they charged me £10 each… although I’m told that’s cheap…

If you’re interested e-mail me and I’ll send full details and pics.

Thanks,

Luke

Riccia is very low maintenance once it's tied down, don't be put off, I tried it and it's easy to grow, even under 0.8WPG! It grows like a weed. Bristlenose plecs destroy all my plants, even well established crypts, just don't try it with Utricularia Graminifolia, you won't get anywhere, and you can't just say it's my plec, as I have 3 of them.

sorry luke just ordered some from aquaessentials before i read your post. Can`t wait for my plants to arrive now to do some aquascaping. i also ordered some riccia, pogostemon helferi, giant valls, tiger lotus, ambulia, hair grass and aponogeton ulvaceus. Can`t believe how much i just spent on just the plants whoops!

plants arrived today, ones from aquaessentials were fantastic quality, others from greenline wer`nt bad either. Rinsed them and put them in my community tank whilst i i sort my new tank. Got the sand and laterite in with some cardboard to divide the planted areas so the substate dos`nt mix. Tomorrow i`ve a free day so i will be doing some aquascaping and planting. i`ll post some pics when i`ve finished ,so you can give me some advice if i should change things. I don`t think i`ve ordered enough plants for a 4ft though, not sure wether to wait and see if they fill out or order more.
