Will this plant carpet quickly, i`ll be using 2x nurafin co2 and 2.5 wpg lighting. Also using sand/laterite substrate. I want a carpet at the front with hair grass behind it. i like the idea of having a cave covered with plants. also thinking of using Apongeton ulvaceus and hm, can the hm grow tall as i was thinking of having it in background, but i know people use it as a carpeting plant as well.
Thanks Angel
Well I'm certainly no expert on U. graminifolia, having only grown it for a couple of months, however ......
How quickly it carpets will all depend on the conditions, Tropica's site says it will carpet in 6 - 8 weeks. But it will depend on your lighting, disolved CO2 level and fertilising regime.
I have about 4wpg over my 60cm tank, with 30 - 35ppm CO2 andADA substrate and ADA ferts and it is doing very well, I've had it in there for a couple of months, but thinned it out recently when I reworked the foreground in the tank. It's already recovering well.
From what I know about the plant it will grow quite well with lower light/CO2 etc, but just grows a bit slower.
It should carpet eventually, but it will take time !
As for your HM, that can be kept low by regular trimming, but if left unchecked will grow in excess of 10cm. It depends how high you want your background plants to be. 10 - 15cm and you should be OK.
Either way there are lot of options for background plants.
Also, regarding the BN's. Here's what Tropica say about it .....
"
Utricularia graminifolia is relatively fragile and thus, it should not be kept with fishes with burrowing behaviour."
Whilst BN's may not actually 'burrow', anything that roots around on the bottom of the tank could cause it problems.
Edit to my earlier post: It wasn't U. graminifolia I saw grown on bogwood, it was glosso and Lilaeopsis brasiliensis ! - My mistake, must drink more coffee before posting
