As per title please, I am setting up a 70 litre tank tomorrow with sand. I would like to know roughly how thick/deep I should lay the sand, and how to plant into it. Do I need a base layer of something, or plant right into the sand? I don't have that many plants at the moment as I am upsizing from a 28 litre tank. A picture of my plants is below, and I shall probably add more of the same really:

Your plants all look like easy ones, so you don't need a layer of anything underneath the sand. If they go yellow or holey later, you can always use root tabs to fertilize them.

You'll need 2/3" of (well washed!) playsand, and you might find you need to hold the plants down with a few larger pebbles for a few weeks, until they've rooted in.

Brilliant, thanks for your help. I'll try and get some pictures up tomorrow/Tuesday all being well.
