I recently planted my 5G betta tank this summer after being a meticulous cleaner.  Now, I've stopped cleaning the gravel.  However the plants that really need the nutrients from the root level like my swords are showing signs of deficiency.  Water levels and lighting are kosher.  I've read not to use liquid ferts since we don't know the full extent of their effects on fish.  Betta comes first.  Any experience with root tabs or suggestions?

Seachem root tabs are by far the best.  I'd recommend these above anything else and will help your swords.

Seachem root tabs agreed. I use them all.

A cheaper alternative that works great as well and is, almost cheap as dirt is using Osmocote Plus, and some gel capsules. Just take the gel capsules and put Osmocote Plus in it and bury those into the substrate. They work great for me and I have had no problems. I have flourshing pearlweed, that I need to trim twice a week or it pertrudes the surface of my water just on the osmocote.
