A few weeks ago I stopped using a small 5 gallon tank and used the filter sponge to give a larger tank a head start cycling. Would it be alright to now remove this filter sponge and put it back in the 5 gallon tank?

If the large tank has its own filter as well, and that filter has been cycled for six weeks or more, it should work. Just test both tanks daily to be sure ammonia and nitrite stay at zero.
Established substrate (gravel etc) also supports beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria on sponges and gravel needs to be kept wet with tank (dechlorinated) water at all times to survive.

I usually leave mine in there for a good 6 weeks. If you are going to put your old tank away then leave the media in the new tank in case QT tank is needed. I have extra media in all of my tanks.
