Hello Alice. Your post reads like you're in need of a change. If you're willing to do something that's completely different, I have a project for you and your 55 gallon tank. The idea is completely crazy, but not horribly expensive. It's something unique and will create a tank that no one else on this site will have. It will take time to set up, but this project isn't complicated. However, if you have cats, then I'll have to find someone else. Interested??

Hi 10 tanks. I’m interested in your idea if it might work for my 36 gal stock tank. I gave away all but a few endler fry from that tank.

Hello Endler. Sure. The project will work with most tanks. But, as we say in the "Waterkeeping Hobby", bigger is always better. The tank has land plants in it in place of standard mechanical filtration and the leaves can be toxic to pets. So, you shouldn't set up this tank if you have cats, dogs or anything else that might want to chew on the plant leaves.

No cats and it’s out of reach of the dogs, who only pass through on their way outside.

Hello again. Just checking to make sure of something. Would you be at all interested in keeping a fish tank that would look like the one in the below photo?

Yes, in my round open top stock tank.

I already ordered some Chinese evergreen.

Excellent! Let me know when you're ready to begin the set up. There are a couple of things you should do prior to introducing the plants to a totally water environment. This will be entertaining!

I’ll be gone the last 3 weeks of July. Am I good to start before then?

let me check if this right though. I used the (hopefully correct) Latin name.

The scientific name is "Aglaonema". There are different varieties of the "Ag" plant. But, all the plant leaves are going to be green. The plant variety in the picture is called "Cutlass". The plants you're looking for are quite large. Check with the local chain grocery stores, like King Soopers, WalMart, Safeway or if you want to spend a bit more, check out the local flower shops. I really don't think the "Ag" plant in your photo isn't going to be large enough.

Ok I’ll look around.
Hello. The plant you're looking for is going to look similar to this one. You'll need a large plant with a comparable root system. Because, we're going to ask the plant to replace the mechanical filtration. So, the larger the plant, the better job it will do to keep the water free of nitrogen.

End. I just remembered something. Lowe's and Home Depot carry a lot of different species of the "Ag" plant. Last time I checked, both stores had some very large plants. They'd be perfect.
