Using Bking Sodau And Epson Salts

iv brought some crushed coral so im going to put a media bag in my external filter and that should sort out the ph problem, just the nitrate problem now to solve out,

Sounds like a plan, what's your nitrate at?

mmcrew, have you checked for any dead fish? Hows your tap nitrates? Any? I think water changes are an effective way to lower nitrates but you don't want to have to do this all the time to stabilize the tank. I'm sure there are other more experienced people that would have some good ideas out there. Maybe do some searching on this sight.

dhoffsett, I'm pretty sure the KH is the problem so I can either use the mix and/or use coral in the filter. Now that I have raised the pH KH Gh, I might try the coral to see if it will stabilize on it's own without having to add the mix every wc. Time for trial and errror

my nitrate is quite high for some reason, i use the test strips, iv checked other tanks and its practically zero, yet my main tank on the test strip is showing to be at the highest reading , iv got no dead fish, only one live plant and when i change my water i use the tap treatment so the water i put into the tank has no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate but the gh and kh are spot on,

i dont understand it, iv even tried using the nitra zorb in a medai bag and that doesnt seem to drop it low enough, iv tried not feeding them as much too, but that doesnt seem to help either,
i only have a sand substrate and ocean rock in my tank, thats it, nothing fancy

any more suggestions would be great,

Increase the weekly water changes. How much are you changing per week?. If its 25% a week, try two 25% water changes per week. Most people start with young fish. Even if you dont add more fish, the bioload increases as the fish grow. A foot long fish produces a lot more waste than twelve one inch fish. Also have you tested for nitrates out of the tap? What are the actual reading for the nitrates in the tank?

ill try the extra water changes see if that helps and go from there,

my fish are between 2.5 and 4 inch long so good sizes really,

i dont no the actualy reading, i can check again when i get home but when i use the test strips the colour changes to a dark pink which is the highest on a test strip reading,

gh,kh are fine, ph could do with raising a little and nitrite is practically zero too, its just the nitrate,

I'd start with a liquid test set which most here feel are very accurate. If it's the only tank that reads high, than it could be your stocking level or size of the fish to tank size. More water changes may be all you can do for now. Hope it works out for you.
