I am getting my new filter tomorrow along with a new test master kit for my new tank. I also have an established coldwater tank, my question is, could i take some media out of my coldwater filter and place it into my new filter? would it help with doing a fishless cycle? could it make it a quicker cycle?

just trying to get some last minute comments before embarking on my first fishless cycle.

i got told that if you have mature media in a new tank it will cut your cycle down by alot, also adding mature substrate to the new tank will help cut the cycle down to

i just got a 180 litre and im going to use the filter out of my coldwater tank in my new tank as well as the substrate on friday, so i'll soon find out if it actually works :p

Agree, MM is the best speedup for a Fishless Cycle. If you're asking whether MM from a coldwater/goldfish filter is OK to use, then the answer is YES, its fine! The best positioning for MM is in the water path directly before the main biomedia of the new filter. In other words, the water inside the filter flows through the mature media, then directly on in to the new uncolonized biomedia. This way the little bacteria don't have far to float before they hit a new, appropriate place to attach themselves.

If you can't position it perfectly like that though, don't stress over it, just getting it anywhere inside the new filter is much better than if it were only somewhere in the tank or something.
