I recently purchased a used fluval 405 filter that was used in a saltwater aquarium, I washed it the best i can but what I'm wondering is if the left over salt residue hurt any of my fish?

You could by replacement sponges! :good:

I would definitely replace all the sponges, and just a rinse with fresh water will be ok for the filter itself.

Good choice of filter. I have a 401 (previous model) and its been running with no problems for 7 years now!!

Cheers

Do you need to use this filter now?
If not let it run off a bucket of clean water for a few days and that will clear the salt (change some water every day)

The 405 is going to be used for my 55 gallon tank in about a week or two, but that is a good idea! Hey do you think i can start the biological filter from a bucket?

Yup, no problem fishless cycling using a bucket, works fine! Just test that you've brought the bucket water up to 5ppm, so your A-Bacs will be getting a good start.

I have a 405.

The only sponges in there are the 4 pre-filters.

Buy some new ceramic loops or bioballs and fill 2 or 3 of the trays with those.
Perhaps some floss in last compartment. Im currently running the carbon media that came free with the filter - but once that's ran out its coming out for more ceramics.

If you've cleaned it properly, it should be fine. IMO there's nothing to stop you running it in your 55G tank for the fishless cycle. Perhaps a 10% water change every few days to ensure any unwanted stuffs are removed.

Peter,

I'm curious that you call them pre-filters? Does Fluval use that term? Its a small thing but I've noticed a number of people using the term and find it curious for sponges that are inside the main filter, which I guess is the case, right? Do these particular sponges come first in the water flow path (and why 4, sounds like the water path is either split or theres a big stack of 4 sponges prior to ceramics?

I've previously seen the term "pre-filter" applied to little encased sponges at the opening of an input pipe way down in the aquarium, or at the intake pipe of a reverse-undergravel filter I believe.

byetheway... I agree with the others that all the media should certainly be changed out from previous salt use and that the baskets and internals should be carefully hand cleaned and then the filter run in fresh if there is time for a period

the key to pollution is dilution!

change the media, rinse rinse and rinse again with the rest of the filter, but don't fret over a tiny remnant after that because it'll be so diluted that it won't do any harm to even the least salt tolerant of fish. :good:

Thank you guys I really appreciate the feedback, I'm going to start cycling the water tonight out of a bucket, thanks again guys.

P.S.
I have another question about lighting for my 20 gallon tank, but I'll start another post.

See the manual: http://www.hagen.com/pdf/aquatic/Fluval_series5_manual.pdf

Foam Screen Frame
The screen frame contains two thick layers of replaceable foam
blocks to provide a highly efficient initial stage of mechanical
filtration. The large surface area of the foam captures particulate
waste, which will be either be broken down or held. This prevents
clogging of biological and chemical media and enhances overall
filter effectiveness.

i have just installed a new 405 can,t get the air out of it any suggestions

There is a little handle you can use, its right next to the inlet hose port, your suppose to pump it up and down after everything has been set up (the filter of course). Even when you think all the air is out its still gonna take 15-20 for all the air to escape the system. Hope this help.

Before you switch it on at the mains pump like crazy until all the bubbles are out, I thought mine was clear switched it on and had loads of bubbles so started again with priming pump and finally got all the air out.

I couldn't get mine to "prime" either.

Remove the main valve and siphon it manually over a bucket.

Once the flow is going you can shut the valve via the level, then push the whole valve back in - the cannister will fill.

Then switch it on.

Is that what you meant?

If not, did you mean its working, but is always full of air - if so, me too.
