I just received a new betta from Thailand yesterday. He was normal yesterday, he could swim fine, his stomach was a little big, but the lady said they had eaten brine shrimp earlier, so I just assumed it was from eating. This morning, the poor fish is practically vertical, and his nose is pointed to the bottom of the tank. His stomach is still swollen. Should I treat for dropsy or bloating? He has no interest in food, and I don't believe he would eat a squished up pea. Would an epson salt bath hurt if he doesn't have dropsy?

are the scales pine coning, if so it will probably be dropsy, but dropsy comes from other things like poor water quality etc.

no pine cone look, but from the sound of other posts, once it gets to that point, it's too late anyway.

My tank stats are amm 0 nitrite 0 nitrate - 10 pH 7.8

I did an epson dip (a thirty minute one with 1 T per gallon), and now I have it in the 1 teas per gallon bath.

There's no change. I do notice redness around the anus. I image that can't be good.

Sounds like what happened to one of our guppies. Noticed it sinking down to the bottom vertically one day, took it out and it died shortly after. It also had a few red specks on it's belly area.
No idea what was wrong with it.

Really hope your betta pulls through whtever is wrong with it!

In general pointing nose down is constipation and tail down is swin bladder. if hes nose down the pea is the best thing, and a few days starve

That's good to hear, I suppose. He's not interested in the pea at all. Can the constipation clear up with just no feeding?

The red around the anus really concerns me. Is that normal with constipation?

His breathing is getting slower. That's not good, I fear.

I dont know about the red anus sorry, fasting him should help a little if he is constipated, you could try some other veg, cucumber/courgette(zuchini) something like that.

I have some small pellet food that has veggies/plants in it (kelp and a few others). Would this help?

Aww.. I'm so sorry :( I was really hoping to come back to this thread to hear that he was doing better :-(

Oh, poor little fish. There was nothing more you could have done it could have been stress related or just unexplained death.

sorry...
