Please help

I have 4 Pristella tetras in a tank with Angels and a Loach - CAE.

1 Pristalla has had a bulging eye for 2 weeks. Water is absolutely fine - all is as it should be except for this 1 tetra.

I teated with ESHA to no avail then anti internal bacteria (interpret) on the advice of the LFS. It hasn't gotten better - in fact it got bigger - I've just checked on him and it has burst. His gills are moving rapidly, as are his fins, and he's hovering very near the bottom of the tank. He's obviously in distress - I need to know if he may get over this or if I need to do the humane thing - is he going to die from the shock?

If anyone has ideas please post back ASAP - I want to do the best I can for him

Thanks, Lol

hi there, need more info tbh, you say your water stats are fine but what are the numbers? Pop Eye is a bacterial infection that is associated with poor water quality,

do you have a quarantine tank/is there any way you can isolate the fish?

fish can survive with just one eye but you need to make sure it doesn't get infected or any worse,

Also can i just check how big the CAE is? these are notorious for trying to eat the eyeballs from fish, once they mature they become quite aggressive and could be an alternative cause for the eye 'injury'

Tank size:
pH:
ammonia:
nitrite:
nitrate:
kH:
gH:
tank temp:

age of setup:

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

Volume and Frequency of water changes:

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:

Tank inhabitants:

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):

Exposure to chemicals:

Digital photo (include if possible):

Hi, thanks - I've stared filling out the info you requested - going to perform a watetr test now and will come back with the stats. I do have a hospital tank, but a goldfish is currently in it - not because he's sick but because HIS tank sprang a leak 4 days ago - I haven't fixed it - feeling so guilty right now : (

Tank size: 120L
pH:
ammonia:
nitrite:
nitrate:
kH: What's this?
gH: What's this?
tank temp: 78 degrees f

age of setup: I've had these fish for 2 years - bought the set up from a guy who'd had them for a year

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): pop eye on 1 pristella only - eye became swollen to the point of bursting, now burst. Looked as if there was a black vein on the front of the eye bulge, now its burst it looks as if there is a gap between his eye and his body. The eye is now smoky.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: every 2 weeks approx. 30%

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: None

Tank inhabitants: 1 angel, one CAE (8-10cm), 4 pristellas - please note the CAE is very peaceful - I know this is unusual! But he's a great tank mate

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): None

Exposure to chemicals: x 2 medicines in 2 weeks - ESHA and Interpret Anti-Inernal Bacteria. 50% water change inbetween, medications over the last 2 weeks. LFS recommended treaing the whole tank as a preventative measure. All other fish seem absolutely fine

Digital photo (include if possible): I will do my best

Just come to do the water test - he's now swimming on his side - the swollen material from the eye is bulging out from the burst site - not at all nice

He sounds in a right mess I would end his misery.
Sorry.

Water changes on tank if his eyes burst it can infect the water.

I know - I am really distressed by what I can see but I don't want to end it if he may be ok

Water stats are:

PH 7.2
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20

I use the API freshwater master test kit...

I'm about to try uploading my camera software to this laptop - it's my school one so there may be restrictions as to what I can install - don't have my own laoptop here but hopefully this will work and a photo will follow... -_-

If he swimming on his side also not good.
Its up to you but he sounds like he's suffering to me.
Do you have any melafix.
Is the ammonia reading due to using meds.
How many gallons is the tank.

I don't have any melafix - but can get some first thing in the morning? I think the ammonia reading is due to using the meds - I haven't done a water change since using the Interpret anti internal bacteria. I'm not sure about gallons - it's 120 litres

See how he is tomorrow.
Good Luck.

Thanks Wilder, I'll log on in the a.m with updates and, no doubt, more questions... And will buy melafix just in case

How is he.
Remembered when I got off the forum last night that fish can swim on there sides when an eye missing.
