Heya,

The story is as follows... I went to my LFS a month back now (probably longer) and brought me 2 German Blue Rams (GBR's), i got told they were a Male and a Female. After having them for a few days, one used to chase the other, bullying it; the bully then turned ill and sadly passed away :-(

So there i was, wondering if i actually did have a male and female, so i posted some pics a week ago and got told i had 2 females -_-

So i went out at the weekend to my LFS and picked up a nice big hefty male; he looked stunning in the tank! so i brought him; he did have minor fin damage; but i hoped it would heal. I came home, and after an hour, i let him in...

All seemed fine and dandy, at first i thought they were eying each other up, and hour later there was minor aggression. I asked for help on here, and after an 1.5-2 hours i rescaped and let the new MALE ram in, then the supposed "FEMALE". Still they fought, i woke up today to see the Male has had his poor fin bitten and bitten =( its very very upsetting :-(

My dad asked me to PROVE i had a Male and female, but now im questioning my skills, and want your opinions. Just the supposed female to be sexed, the other is a male 100%.

Someone sexed this one as a female before, and said pink bellies can happen with the presence of another male; but still nothing, and looking in the LFS, all of there rams ALOT smaller than this one, had pink bellies screaming out =/

PLEASE HELP! :shout:

Looks like a female but hard to tell I find the females always have a black spot on the side where males tend to have more blue in the spot and can sometimes when stressed have no spot. Have you noticed a pink belly? If yes then female for sure. Cichlids are funny some so called "peaceful" fish can just be mean every fish has it's own personality and sounds like your wants to be an only ram. If this bothers you take it back. I have a keyhole that was nice when younger now fully matured he has killed his buddy. So it depends on the fish. Sorry.

hey!

thanks for the info :D

no pink belly noticed at all =/

I think you just have a fish that does not want to share. Simple as that. It happens from time to time. Sorry you have a bully. Some times getting a larger group helps too if you want to risk it try getting 2 or 3 more. This will spred out the aggresion so it's not all put on one fish.

i doubt my 20 gal can handle 4 =(

It is a female, shown by the blue spangling that are in and around the black spot on the side of the Ram.

I would also buy 2 more
and then remove the initial 2, re-landscape the tank, do a hefty water change (around 50%) and then add all 4 together at the same time, Once a pair forms you can then rehome the other 1-2 that are causing problems

i sort of agree with davo.
i would personally get rid of the questionably sexed fish.
i had a gbr with i bright pink belly that was a male. i think it is caused by hormone treated fish. the wrong sex traits i mean
either way i would try to find a definite female and let her pair up with your new male.

good luck.

this is my female(slight pink belly)

Notice also in that photo of the male and female the Spikes on the dorsal fin. The males first 2 are higher and the female they are not as high they are almost level with the other spikes. If I were you I would just give up on trying to get a mate and enjoy the one fish.

This concurrs with what I said in the duplicate thread in Tropical Discussion section.

If you are having sexing problems, odds are that hormone treated fish are involved. Best to get rid of that fish and pair a good fish with good fish, particularly if you want to breed, you want the best possible base stock if you are contemplating breeding at all.

okay guys

the aggression has dropped.

I am having the hefty new male taken away by a friend.

I will then ask my LFS for a few females and see if he pairs with any :)
