ammonia between 0.25 and0.50 closer to 0.50
everything else good all at 0, ph holding at 7.2

did a 50% water change

when i test about 2 hours later ammonia still at about 0.50 do i change water again ?

If you have ammonia but 0 nitrite, the tank isn't cycled - you will need to do another water change to control levels, and continue to do so as ammonia remains high. Eventually nitrite will go through the same process.

How long has the tank been set up? What's the volume, and stocking list?

Don't know if this thread was before your other one, but yes you always need to do another water change if the ammonia or nitrite does not go below 0.25ppm. (We're assuming your tap water does not have ammonia in it so let us know if that is not the case.) You need to wait one hour minimum between water changes and since the last one seemed to have little effect, you should increase the percentage to 60 or 70 percent the next time.

how do i get ammonia out of tap water

Well that explains your problem!

I must run at the mo but more members will be along to help...

During cycling you may have to do some sort of mix of different source waters..
