Hi All,

Hopefully Nelly will pick up on this topic and lend some help, but any advice from anyone would be appreciated.

5 months ago I bought 5 of Nelly's young Channa ornatipinnis in the hope of getting a breeding pair as he did. I have been watching them almost daily for ages for any signs of pairing off, but have never noticed anything obvious. Anyway last week my son was admitted to hospital 100 miles away for a Bone Marrow transplant and I have the pleasure of watching our other 3 under 5's and haven't had as much time to devote to my fish. Last night I was sat in front of the tank watching the channa and to my horror I saw one which was in a very bad state. Almost all it's finnage had gone and it has very angry looking sores on it's body. I removed it from the tank straight away and have put it in an hospital tank and am treating with melafix.

About 10 mins ago I was feeding the remaining 4 channa in the tank and have noticed a number of very tiny fry swimming about!!!! I have no clue which 2 have done the deed and don't know what to do from here in terms of feeding the fry and making sure they survive. I did notice one grab one of the fry in it's mouth and swim behind some plants with it but don't know whether one of the other 2 were eating it or it was a parent taking it back to the "Nest" so to speak.

Please any advice is very much needed!!!!

Hello my friend, firstly iam sorry to hear about the little one, my best regards and hope all works out for the best :good:

Ok onto the channa quiz, well congrats buddy, all i can say at this time is one down two to eliminate, i would remove fry into another tank or the adults..Then as before with the four until you can eliminate and find the true pair, my moneys on the one with the fry in the mouth as one parent, but that leaves three to go....if threatened they will grab fry in the mouth and find somewhere safe to release fry, which they release usually by spitting through the gills...they make the best parents,,,you could just leave it and see what happens..obviously mine were only two but id imagine given tank mates they would keep them at bay, feeding if you dont have nothing very finely crush up flakes, look on ebay for "deshelled brineshrimp eggs" all you do is feed like a dry fish food, they love the stuff and it will take them right through to next foods<solids and chopped prawns..

See now if you notice one hanging around near to another as they both guard the fry well they did in my case, and hopefully in 12+days they very well could spawn again as mine did, the only other ornate breeder i know of had three batches in two weeks, then went a while then another came along and all batches grew up together.....
Blinding stuff though mate,so impressed,

Thanks mate,

It's all down to your great advice lol. I have some luquifry number 1 as I have also been breeding danio and feeding the fry with that. I have got some decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, however the fry seem too small in my opinion to eat them atm. But I'll put some in anyway. Also I think I've eliminated another one as a poss parent as it's hiding behind the filter with a bit of fin damage so I'll remove that one also.

As ever Nelly ur adice as been like gold dust and I am so grateful for it!!

PS My son is on his 3rd day of "conditioning" with chemotherapy drugs before the transplant on the 19th and is doing very well!! :)

I am quite worried about the injured channa I mentioned earlier, as it really is in a sorry state. I am adding melafix to the water to help with the healing but the fish has become very lethargic and isn't eating. I'll add some pics of the injury and hopefuly someone will give me some ideas of what else I could try to help the poor thing! :(

all i can say is keep doing what you doing, mine went like that, the third wheel...this was its wounds, got worse as i left it in tank and it became better with only waterchange, but seek advise from wilder as iam not up on healing fish, hehe but always found a waterchange helps speed up recovery..but obviously not to much

I've found that the channas can inflict terriible injuries but then if seperated they tend to recover ver ywell as well. great fish

Thanks for the input guys. Guess I'll just continue as I am then with the water changes and melafix!!

On a side note, I have noticed the pair wrapping this morning. It looked like they were tieing themselves in knots lol. Does this mean they are going to spawn again?

Andy

This is very good news, wrap dropping as i call it,so origanal

Mine would do this as they were spawning, then i found eggs hours after, iam wondering if you could be lucky enough that you had a second pair, they usually spawn again around 2 weeks after, also channa do lay what is called feeder eggs, but mine never seemed to do this,

how is everything going with them?

Everything is going great. I've removed all but the pair from the tank and so far have counted about 25 fry, so not as many as you had lol. The fry are swimming freely around the tank and mot being taken back by the parents, but the parents are constantly watching them. Is it normal for them to be swimming so freely already? By freely I mean not being captured by a parent and "spat back".

The problem I have now is what to do with the other three, as they are in a very small tank together which is definately not ideal.

BTW I havent noticed anymore eggs or wrapping since that one time.

Andy

This is brilliant news mate, when my layed the second batch nothing touched them and they co-inhabited just fine, still have one origanal left with the new batch,it was one which i kept as it was dwarfed by the first group, now this group have nearly caught up with him for size, they grow quick and are gannets

glad to hear this news mind, could you please check what you ph is at present and what temp the tank water is, what is your waterchange scedule with these guys and what are you feeding?

also how is your filter positioned in the tank, flow i mean?like mine is angled so flow goes straight through and down, leaving surface like a mill pool
