Hi all -

Well i'm hooked! and I am going to get a new large tank this week to upgrade from my 35 litre to a 200 litre. Hoping to do the tank upgrade in place so will not be bagging the fish etc.

Am looking for any kind words of advice - here is my plan of action:

50% Water change the old tank over the next few days to get Nitrate levels down and be close as possible to tap water conditions.
Physically setup the new tank next to the old one.
Put in the new substrate and decor and half fill up the new tank with 100 litres of de-chlor'd water.
Put in a new heater and get the new tank up to temp.
Move my plants over.
Move my filter from the old tank to the new tank.
Move my fishes and shrimp over to their new home!
Question: Old tank water - move it into the new tank or discard it?
Let the fish settle in and then top up the new tank with more water.

Anything i'm missing or being stupid about?
Thanks

i will still day u need to bag the fish just to be on the safe side. its better to do it and it take that little bit longer than to not do it and wish u had

We recently upgraded our cold water fish form a 35L to a 150L. We moved everyone across along with some old tank water (not alot as our tank waters stats was exactly te same as our tap water) and the old filter. We didn't move substrate or decor across. We then kept the old filter running next to the new one for 3 weeks. We are keeping a close eye on everything but apart from doing more frequent w/c than we normally would everything seems fine. As long as you keep the old filter in for a little while and keep a close eye on the stats you should be fine.

I'd add heated water to get everything up to temp quicker (we boil ours in a kettle as we have a properly old school water heater which I think if copper so the water coming out of our hot tap probably isn't safe).

Best of luck :) I'm sure your fish etc will love having all that space!

Thank you :)

Picking up the new tank tomorrow - wish me luck!

Will post some pictures when everything is setup - probably going to look a bit bare until I sort out some more decor! I'm going to try and get more involved with live plants - need to read up more on CO2 etc. which I didn't use before.

Well everything is setup and moved over - did end up bagging in the end - gave me more time.

Everyone seems happy in their new home - Rasboras in particular are racing end to end - love those guys!
