Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for a bit of advice.

I've had a small tank since April last year, it's about 68 litres. I had no problems setting the tank up, went through a fishless cycle, added fish slowly and have had very few losses since then.

This hobby is so addictive though I just had to upgrade to a larger tank so on Friday my brand new 4 ft tank is being delivered, I think it's 250 litres ish.

I bought an Eheim 2026 professional 2 and have been running that on the small tank, as the filter that came with the tank was rubbish, and I knew that I would be looking to upgrade tanks, so that's the only filter I have.

What's the best way to move my fish into their new home? Would I be able to set the new tank up with sand/gravel, plants, heater etc and then once the water reaches the correct temperature just set up the Eheim in the new tank and move the fish over?

Do I have to go through a cycle on the new tank, which would be a problem because I only have the one filter and having just spent all my money on a new tank I can't afford another one at the moment.

Any tips you could give on making this a stress free experience, for me and the fish, would be appreciated.

Sandra

Am I correct in saying you have had the Eheim external filter running on your small tank from the start? If that is the case you won't have to worry about cycling the tank as the bacteria is in the filter. If the old tank needs moving (the new tank is going in it's place) I use a plastic (new) dustbin and put the heater in it. Once the old tank is pretty much empty you can then move it. Once the new tank is in place I'd add the substrate, other decor and half fill with water then bring the water up to the same temperature as the water the fish are in (make sure the heater is completely submerged). You could also set your filter up in the new tank and start it up. I'd then start adding the fish, once they're all in I'd put the old tank water in the new tank (which will still be roughly the same temp) then top it up. Add some plants and you're pretty much done!

Thanks for the replies guys. The Eheim has been in the smaller tank for over a year. I'm going to fill the tank on the weekend and move them across early next week.

Now if I can just get the bogwood I bought to stop staining the water I've got it soaking in :/

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but know a bit about wood. The staining is due to tanin leaching out of the wood. Tanin is found naturally in timber, it's slightly acidic. One way to get rid of it is to boil the bogwood for a couple of hours before adding it to the tank.

I understand that the tanin is not harmful to fish and may have some beneficial properties for fish, however others may be able to confirm whether that is true or not.

hope it all goes well.

yup just set the tank up, get the water up to temp then transfer the fish filter and everything else across.

:good:

and tannine's from the wood won't harm your fish, just make your tank look a bit liker someone's weed in it.

it'll go with time and regular water changes if your sick of soaking it then just stick it in the tank.

carbon in your filter can also remove it, but you'd need to put the carbon in and remove it 24hrs later. it wouldn't stop the wood leaching, just remove what's in the water. not brilliant but will help a bit.

:)
